Spanning from the steam carriages of the late nineteenth century to the design masterpieces of the Fifties, from the protagonists of epic races and memorable trips to the prototypes that guide the research directions: the Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile preserves a collection of over 200 original cars from 80 different brands that tell the historical evolution of the invention that changed the world. The history of design – parallel to the exploration of more contemporary languages and areas of design – plays a central role in the museum narrative: on display are iconic models – masterpieces of craftsmanship and style – that tell the story of the constant search for innovative and avant-garde solutions, both in terms of aesthetics and functionality. In the history of world car design, Marcello Gandini was the most revolutionary. Dream cars such as the Lamborghini Miura and Marzal, the Lancia Stratos or the Alfa Romeo Carabo and Montreal came out of his pencil: groundbreaking creations unlike anything seen before, innovative projects both from an aesthetic and engineering point of view.

ULTRA-LEGGERA

The ULTRA-LEGGERA exhibition – conceived from the collaboration between Studio Marcello Gandini, QAM and VCUArts Qatar – is inspired by Marcello Gandini’s revolutionary legacy: a project that celebrates the designer’s work through an innovative set design that puts his iconic works in dialogue with the creations of the students of the design schools. The exhibition explores the theme of movement not only physically but culturally and creatively, opening up new perspectives and fostering connectionsbetween tradition and innovation. With this in mind and as part of the exhibition, the Museum proposes a Summer School, designed in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino and Studio Marcello Gandini and conceived to deepen the connections between innovation, aesthetics and mobility.

ULTRA-LEGGERA

THE DESIGN OF IDEAS – 1st EDITION

On the occasion of the course, the masterclass Learning from Marcello Gandini and Mobility: Moving Interiors will also be presented: four video lessons taught by the Master Designer himself. Designed for the next generation of designers in dialogue with the experiences of already established professionals, the Summer School creates a bridge between Italy and Qatar, thanks to the collaboration with the QAM – Qatar Auto Museum and the VCUarts Qatar - Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts Qatar, offering a perspective on design and mobility as a creative and cultural expression.

COURSE PRESENTATION

The Summer School is a groundbreaking initiative – an intensive course that, inspired by the reflections and enduring genius of Marcello Gandini, seeks to address the unique challenges of today’s creative professions. Designers, architects, and engineers are encouraged to step beyond their professional comfort zones, integrating their technical expertise with a fresh perspective – embracing lateral thinking, alternative approaches to creativity, and analogue tools. Paper, origami, plastic modelling, observation and experimentation offer participants the opportunity to learn from the direct experiences of professors, designers and professionals who have collaborated with Marcello Gandini, through direct engagement with the contents but also in unconventional places to the traditional training – from the wind tunnel at the Politecnico of Torino to the Studio of Marcello Gandini in Almese. The ultimate goal is to draw on knowledge of the past to inspire bold and innovative experimentation for the future – imagining solutions that may be challenging, but are truly new.

COURSE MODE

With a dynamic approach, combining lectures, guided tours of the Museum’s collection, and a preview of the exhibition ULTRA-LEGGERA, project work and workshops at MAUTO, Politecnico di Torino and Studio Marcello Gandini, participants will have the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge acquired and to create a project output that will find its home within the ULTRA-LEGGERA exhibition project. This interdisciplinary and dialogical method will also promote synergies and comparisons between participants, further enriching the training experience.

«The pencil is an extraordinary means of connection between the brain –
ideas – and reality. Starting a project from a sheet of paper and a pencil
means that there is an idea.»
